FISHERS – Three-time defending state runner-up Hamilton Southeastern took eight of 12 girls swimming events Feb. 6 down the road at the Fishers Sectional, winning two of three relay races and posting a pair of double winners en route to the second-ranked Royals’14th straight sectional championship.

HSE finished with 416 points, 58 better than eighth-ranked host Fishers and well ahead of third-place Yorktown (141). Oak Hill (123 placed fourth at the eight-team event, with Pendleton Heights (109) fifth.
Southeastern got it done both individually and as a unit. Two of the Royal relay foursomes were victorious, while seniors Carly Mercer and Megan Schwartzkopf each won two solo events.
HSE’s 200-yard freestyle relay unit of seniors Aviry Reich, Aubrey Hertzler, Schwartzkopf, and Mercer swam a winning 1:35.70, while the Royals’ foursome of Reich, senior Molly Milborn, Schwartzkopf, and senior Paige Copeland took the 400 free relay in 3:33.11.
Meanwhile, Mercer – the 2008 state champ in the 100 free – paced 1-2 HSE finishes in both the 50 free and the 100 free. Mercer won the 50 in :23.37 with Reich second in :24.14, and she took the 100 free in :50.97 with Reich second again in :51.99.
Schwartzkopf likewise led a pair of 1-2 finishes, taking the 200 free in 1:53.77 (Milborn was second in 1:56.86) and the 500 free in 5:06.51 (Copeland was runner-up in 5:11.88).
The Royals’ other wins came from Hertzler (a 2:08.90 in the 200 individual medley) and Copeland (:56.99 in the 100 butterfly).
Coach Ken Stopkotte’s Fishers girls fared well in only their fourth year in existence, capturing three events and placing second in four others.
The Tigers got the home crowd into it early by spanking arch-rival Hamilton Southeastern in the 200 medley relay. Senior Kacy Rhoades, junior Alexandra Carmack, sophomore Heather Cunningham, and junior Samantha Montgomery swam a winning 1:46.83 for Fishers, which entered the finals a second-plus slower than HSE (1:49.54) both during the regular season and the prelims.
Carmack also captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.22 for Fishers, while 11-event state leader senior Gail Susdorf easily won the 1-meter diving competition with 505.2 points.
Yorktown, the state runner-up in 2006, had one champion in sophomore Larah Beaver (:56.68 in the 100 backstroke).
